{"id":474,"date":"2012-03-15T17:40:30","date_gmt":"2012-03-15T17:40:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anthonypioppi.com\/?p=474"},"modified":"2012-03-23T17:47:23","modified_gmt":"2012-03-23T17:47:23","slug":"ngf-says-1575-courses-closed-in-011-19-opened","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theaposition.com\/anthonypioppi\/blog\/474\/ngf-says-1575-courses-closed-in-011-19-opened","title":{"rendered":"NGF Says 157.5 Courses Closed in 2011, 19 Opened"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the National Golf Foundation, 157.5 courses closed in 2011 while 19 opened, measured in 18-hole equivalents (18HEQ).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/anthonypioppi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/57\/2012\/03\/golf_course_closed.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-475\" src=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/anthonypioppi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/57\/2012\/03\/golf_course_closed.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" \/><\/a>Continuing the trend, \u00a0\u201cclosures were disproportionately lower priced public facilities including a large number of 9-hole courses,\u201d according the NGF press release.<\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The NGF said that \u201csince the market correction in golf course supply began in 2006, there has been a cumulative net reduction of 358.5 golf courses (18HEQ), which represents a drop of 2.4% off the peak supply year of 2005.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe net reduction in courses was overdue \u2013 growth in the number of golfers and rounds played over the past 20+ years was not nearly sufficient to support all of the courses that were built during the boom that began in the early 90s.\u00a0 \u00a0Since 1991, the number of 18HEQ in the U.S. has grown by 30%, outpacing golfer growth of 6.5% over that span.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the NGF, in 2000, at the height of golf course construction, at the of the the year, there were 362 courses more than at the end of 1999. The NGF also said that from 1896-2005, more than 4,500 (18HEQ) were added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cumulative reduction in course supply over the past six years has been quite modest, and pales in comparison to the net increase in facilities that occurred over the two decades prior to this recent pullback,\u201d says Joe Beditz, President and CEO of the NGF.\u00a0 \u201cThe slow correction that is now occurring is very much overdue and necessary, to help return the golf course business to a more healthy equilibrium between supply and demand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NGF Golf Facility Supply Index remained at 83 in 2011, according to the press release.\u00a0 The index tracks the ratio of golfers to golf courses.\u00a0 The baseline value of 100 represents the average number of golfers per course (18HE) in the U.S. for the five years 1986\u20131990.\u00a0 The index can be viewed as a measure of how busy courses are likely to be, or how difficult or easy it might be to arrange a tee time.\u00a0 A value of 83 means that courses are 17% less crowded than they were 20 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe supply correction is likely to continue for the foreseeable future,\u201d according to Beditz, as post-recession demand continues to be soft, and most markets remain oversupplied.\u00a0 This gradual reduction in courses represents a natural re-balancing of the market.\u00a0 The outlook for golf remains slightly positive \u2013 with a stabilization of demand likely in the near term, and slow growth likely in the longer term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to the National Golf Foundation, 157.5 courses closed in 2011 while 19 opened, measured in 18-hole equivalents (18HEQ).
