According to The Day <\/a>newspaper in New London, Conn,:<\/p>\n

Nine patients are being treated or being taken for treatment this morning to local hospitals for injuries related to a lightning strike at the Lake of Isles golf course in North Stonington, near the Foxwoods casino.<\/p>\n

Two of the victims were taken to The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, and a third is expected, Backus spokesman Shawn Mawhiney said.<\/p>\n

Four other victims are being treated at The Westerly Hospital, spokesman Nick Stahl said. Two victims with minor injuries were on their way to the Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, according to L&M spokesman Mike O’Farrell.<\/p>\n

According to the North Stonington fire marshal, a total of eight people were struck by lighting at the golf course.<\/p>\n

This morning’s storm also knocked out power for 5,500 Norwich Public Utility customers when lightning struck a utility pole.<\/p>\n

The North Main Street substation, which feeds the Laurel Hill, East Side, Greeneville, and NFA\/Broadway area, is out of service, according to a NPU spokesperson. Crews are working on the substation.<\/p>\n

According to Connecticut Light & Power, there are outages affecting around 100 customers in Preston, Montville, Salem and parts of Lyme.<\/p>\n

Water Street, Howard Street, Pequot Avenue and Thames Street in New London were impassible during the height of the storm.<\/p>\n

Amtrak service between New Haven and New York, which had been delayed due to power system problems, is running again.<\/p>\n

A massive thunderstorm arrived in the New London area at about 9 this morning. The county is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 1 p.m. today, according to the National Weather Service.<\/p>\n

The weather service also has issued flood and flash flood advisories for the region.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Mashantucket Pequot tribe owns the property where the golf course is located. The Troon Company, from Arizona, owns the course itself.<\/div>\n

This is the second incident involving golf course maintenance staff in Connecticut this year. A worker at Portland Golf Course was killed after the three-wheel sprayer he was driving overturned on him.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
