Big for Phil, Bigger for Golf"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/daviddesmith\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2013\/07\/mickelson1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-652 alignleft\" alt=\"142nd Open Championship - Final Round\" src=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/daviddesmith\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2013\/07\/mickelson1-300x212.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theaposition.com\/daviddesmith\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2013\/07\/mickelson1-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theaposition.com\/daviddesmith\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2013\/07\/mickelson1.jpg 650w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Some may have been pulling for Lee Westwood to win his first major in his home realm.\u00a0 Some may have been hoping that Tiger would add another notch to his belt in his pursuit of Jack Nicklaus\u2019s majors-win record.\u00a0 Undoubtedly, there were many (like my niece) who wanted to see Adam (\u201cAdonis\u201d) Scott capture his second major of the year.\u00a0 And a few may even have been rooting for Henrik Stenson or Hunter Mahan to break through.\u00a0 But when all was said and done, you\u2019d have to be a serious Phil-a-phobe not to have gotten warm feelings from Phil Mickelson\u2019s win at Muirfield yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>In June, Mickelson narrowly missed winning the U.S. Open at Merion.\u00a0 It was his sixth second-place finish in that event.\u00a0 Last week, he righted his ship by capturing the Scottish Open at Castle Stuart \u2013 his first win on a links course.\u00a0 Yesterday, with the sun shining over East Lothian, he started tied for ninth and used a back-nine charge of historic proportions to win his fifth major and capture the venerable Claret Jug for the first time.\u00a0 Nobody \u2013 NOBODY \u2013 would ever have predicted that ANY player could shoot 32 on that tough stretch of holes to steal the 2013 Open.\u00a0 But Mickelson did, without even seemingly breaking a sweat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/daviddesmith\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2013\/07\/13245_564490173589905_2046780886_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-653\" alt=\"13245_564490173589905_2046780886_n\" src=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/daviddesmith\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2013\/07\/13245_564490173589905_2046780886_n-226x300.jpg\" width=\"226\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theaposition.com\/daviddesmith\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2013\/07\/13245_564490173589905_2046780886_n-226x300.jpg 226w, https:\/\/theaposition.com\/daviddesmith\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2013\/07\/13245_564490173589905_2046780886_n.jpg 340w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/><\/a>Mickelson called it the best round he\u2019d ever played.\u00a0 The shots he hit coming in will long be remembered by those who saw them, not the least of which being his approach to the 18<sup>th<\/sup>, which narrowly missed a bunker and set up his coup-de-grace closing birdie.\u00a0 But what the world saw after the round was over was even more compelling, I think.<\/p>\n<p>First, there were the tears in the eyes of Mickelson\u2019s caddie Jim Mackay.\u00a0 Partners in golf for more than 20 years, they\u2019d done something very special on this day and Mackay knew it better than anyone.\u00a0 Unlike many tour players, who go through caddies the way hackers go through golf balls, theirs is a partnership and friendship that has stood the test of time to the benefit of both men.<\/p>\n<p>Then, rushing over to greet Phil after his commanding finish were his wife, Amy, and his children, Amanda, Sophia and Evan, who gathered together in one big family hug to celebrate his awesome accomplishment.\u00a0 Hundreds of high-fives followed from fans as Phil went to sign his card, and as Phil held the Claret Jug high to the applause of the multitudes around the 18<sup>th<\/sup> green, it was clear that this was not just a popular win, but a win that was good PR for the game of golf.<\/p>\n<p>Mickelson is golf\u2019s ultimate family man.\u00a0 He flew home to San Diego the day before this year\u2019s U.S. Open to attend his daughter\u2019s graduation.\u00a0 Her <i>junior high school<\/i> graduation.\u00a0 The family was there to see him win at Castle Stuart.\u00a0 And they were there at Muirfield to mob him after his Open triumph.\u00a0 In an age when too many athletes in too many sports care only about contracts, Mickelson\u2019s values have traveled with him almost every week in the form of his wife and kids.<\/p>\n<p>What yesterday\u2019s win showed was that sometimes, nice guys don\u2019t finish last.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some may have been pulling for Lee Westwood to win his first major in his home realm.\u00a0 Some may have&#8230;
