Naples, Fla. \u2013 Top-rated golf course architect \u00a0Tom Fazio recently visited with the new owners of The Club at Mediterra to provide advice for maintaining and updating the two championship courses he designed a decade ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I have great memories about the entire process of designing Mediterra\u2019s golf courses and golf learning center,\u201d said Fazio.\u00a0 \u201cWe designed two distinct and very special golf courses that are truly complementary to the world-class nature of Mediterra overall.\u00a0 And now, thanks to the dedication of the members who own and have very special feelings about The Club, Mediterra\u2019s future is brighter than I could have ever dreamed.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

In December the members purchased The Club at Mediterra from the community\u2019s beleaguered developer, Bonita Bay Group. The purchase price was not disclosed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bonita Bay Group, based here in southwest Florida, is considered one of the country’s preeminent developers of private upscale golf and country clubs. But a run on membership redemptions coupled with mounting debt has left Bonita Bay with numerous troubled assets and\u00a0few buyers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mediterra, one of the most exclusive clubs in the Naples area, is one exception now that the club’s members boldly acquired the club two months ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The members now own all the Club facilities including the two Fazio-designed championship golf courses, an 1,800-square-foot golf learning center and short-game practice area, the 25,000-square-foot clubhouse and the Sports Club with five Har-Tru tennis courts, an outdoor pool, three spa rooms and fitness center.\u00a0 The members also own the private Mediterra Beach Club on the Gulf of Mexico which features an elevated swimming pool, expansive sundeck, and indoor and al fresco dining.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOur members are united in their dedication to enhancing Mediterra\u2019s reputation as one of the finest private clubs in the nation,” said Rich Schmidt, chairman of the board. “Getting advice from Tom Fazio was key to achieving that goal.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Schmidt explained that no living designer has more credits on Golf Digest\u2019s list of America\u2019s 100 Greatest Golf Courses and Golfweek\u2019s collection of America\u2019s Best as Tom Fazio.\u00a0 The Golf Digest poll for Best Modern Day Golf Course Architect was discontinued after Tom claimed the award three consecutive times.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cFazio is considered by many people to be the master of golf course design and it means a great deal to have him spend a day touring the courses and advising us on what we should consider going forward,\u201d said Schmidt.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For Fazio, it was a pleasant return home to one of his most prized private club creations\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOur design team is extremely proud of the North and South courses and golf learning center\/short-game practice area at Mediterra,” Fazio said after his daylong tour of the facilities. \u201cBut no matter how magnificent a course is when it is first built, it changes over time and we applaud the members\u2019 commitment to keeping their golf facilities at the highest level.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Club at Mediterra has achieved national recognition as one of the top golf facilities in America.\u00a0 It has been honored with the Environmental Leaders in Golf Award from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America and Golf Digest magazine and has been named by Golf Magazine as one of The 50 Best Golf Communities in America. Mediterra has also been named one of the top 100 golf communities in America by Travel + Leisure Golf for four consecutive years and twice by Links magazine. It was the first-ever 36-hole course to earn Audubon International\u2019s Silver Signature Sanctuary status.\u00a0<\/p>\n
