\"\"<\/a>As part of a major redesign in conjunction with its new Camelback <\/strong>Ballroom, Starwood\u2019s flagship Phoenician Resort in Scottsdale, Ariz., will be breaking <\/strong>ground on a major enhancement to the Oasis Nine, part of its 27-hole regulation-length golf course.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Known for tranquil water features and tree-lined fairways \u2014 the Oasis will soon be home to Arizona\u2019s only \u201cSand Island\u201d green. <\/strong>Golf Course Architect Forrest Richardson is overseeing development of the work in conjunction with Troon <\/strong>Golf, long-time operating manager of the resort\u2019s award winning golf facility.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a homecoming for me,\u201d notes Richardson. \u201cGrowing up in Arizona, I played golf here when the property <\/strong>was home to the old Jokake Inn, and the course was known as The Valley Club.\u201d<\/p>\n

Richardson\u2019s mentor, the late Arthur Jack Snyder, created the first edition of the <\/strong>Phoenician Golf Club in the 1980s, eventually paving the way for the 27-hole modern <\/strong>classic that now wraps around the southern base of Camelback Mountain. <\/strong>The design of\u00a0the new 9th Hole of the Oasis Nine will be a risk-reward par-4 of just <\/strong>over 300 yards. <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe tee shot will be a matter of options,\u201d according to Richardson. <\/strong>\u201cThe golfer will be able to play conservatively, or go for it \u2014 and the final hurdle will <\/strong>be the exciting approach to a narrow green rising up from a \u2018sea\u2019 of sand.\u201d<\/p>\n

Construction of the new golf hole will be handled by golf builder Landscapes <\/strong>Unlimited. Landscapes is among the world\u2019s largest and most celebrated golf course construction <\/strong>firms with projects throughout the U.S. and internationally. The company\u2019s <\/strong>resume includes numerous U.S. Open and PGA tournament courses. <\/strong>During the past year, upgrades to the Phoenician Golf Club have included turf <\/strong>and irrigation renovations, as well as the refurbishment of the water features that define <\/strong>the golf experience throughout the three distinct nines \u2014 Oasis, Desert and Canyon.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The new Camelback Ballroom will join The Phoenician\u2019s existing 22,000 square-foot <\/strong>Grand Ballroom, offering 15,000 square feet of interior meeting and event space, as well <\/strong>as beautiful exterior settings. The new ballroom is destined to become the resort\u2019s architectural <\/strong>showpiece, featuring spectacular views of Camelback Mountain, the new golf hole and sweeping views of Scottsdale.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
