Jane Spicer started Daphne\u2019s, named for her mother, as a little business in 1978, when she was in high school. Jane was so passionate and determined that it grew into Phoenix-based Daphne\u2019s Headcovers, which are used by the biggest names in golf around the world as well as amateurs around the corner.<\/p>\n
Tiger Woods has used Daphne\u2019s tiger headcovers since his mother came across them when Woods was still a teenager.<\/p>\n
“He\u2019s been carrying Daphne\u2019s headcovers his entire life,\u2019\u2019 Spicer said. “`That started everything. When he won the Masters the first time, I was really brilliant at marketing.<\/p>\n
After a pause, she added modestly, “It was total luck.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
<\/a>Bubba Watson got into headcover design.<\/p><\/div>\n
That\u2019s not exactly true. There was plenty of hard work, creativity and attention to quality that helped her be lucky.<\/p>\n
After making headcovers while in high school and college, Spicer landed “a real job,\u2019\u2019 as she put it: “I was tired of always being covered in fur.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
That hum-drum didn\u2019t last long.<\/p>\n
“I sold my car, bought a cargo van, went on the road for six years,\u2019\u2019 she said. “I hit every golf course along the way, to build the business big enough so I could stay home.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
Daphne\u2019s doesn\u2019t do endorsement agreements. But the list of pros who find them irresistible includes Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, Ernie Els, Darren Clarke, Angel Cabrera, Jerry Kelly, Justin Leonard and Craig Stadler on the men\u2019s side, to name a few.<\/p>\n
The long list of LPGA players who have Daphne\u2019s headcovers includes Dottie Pepper, Meg Mallon, In Bee Park, and many other current players from around the world.<\/p>\n
A quick spin around Daphne’s\u00a0website<\/a> reveals headcover categories for barnyard, birds, cats, dogs, reptiles, amphibians, sea, garden wildlife. Jane\u00a0also has a Bubba Watson headcover that was developed with a serious amount of input from Watson that helped her get the chest hair, hair-do, mole and color choices just right.<\/p>\n “I have Bubba\u2019s all over my office,” Spicer said.<\/p>\n Two more people headcovers are scheduled to debut in 2016, another golfer and a non-golf celebrity.<\/p>\n Jane Spicer visits with Arnold Palmer<\/p><\/div>\n Daphne\u2019s headcovers retail from $25. 99 to $32.99. Her college-aged son was especially impressed when she texted a photo of her with Tiger in Phoenix last year.<\/p>\n<\/a>
