\"Presidents-cup-logo\"<\/a>The Ryder Cup format is a compelling one that works on many levels.<\/p>\n

Even before it was played at Medinah last year,\u00a0I knew how big it was. But seeing it up close, and seeing the way it gripped a city like Chicago in the midst of Bears\/college football season, was boggling.<\/p>\n

I remember walking the course on Friday, using one of the two inside-the-ropes badges allotted to the Chicago Sun-Times. (Inside-the-ropes badges were even more restricted at the Ryder Cup than at the U.S. Open and PGA.)<\/p>\n

After Jim Furyk stuck an approach late in a best-ball round, I had just finished climbing the steep hill to the green when a voice boomed out behind me, “Here we go!\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

I turned around and was startled to see Michael Jordan grinning at me, ear to ear, as excited as a kid. (Yes, it was that Michael Jordan, who was serving as an honorary assistant captain. And loving it.)<\/p>\n

\"The<\/a>That said, this week\u2019s Presidents Cup isn\u2019t going to come close to generating that kind of excitement even though it uses the same dramatic format.<\/p>\n

As one who loves the Ryder Cup approach\u2014we play an annual scaled down Writer\u2019s Cup between Illinois and Wisconsin media that\u2019s always a treat\u2014I wonder why even though I know the answer.<\/p>\n

One problem is that the International team has won only once in nine tries since the event debuted in 1994. Another is that the Ryder Cup, which began in the \u201820s, has a long and rich history. Another is that the Euros have been handing it to Team USA lately.<\/p>\n

And Europe, especially the United Kingdom, gets \u00a0jacked up for the Ryder Cup in a way that Australia and South Africa can\u2019t, from an opponent standpoint. I was impressed by how many Euro fans crossed the pond to watch, and dazzled by the celebrities inside and outside the golf world who were in the gallery when I walked with Keegan Bradley and Rory McIlroy on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Another reason the Presidents Cup will have its hands full is that football season remains tough competition in vast portions of the United States. Even the Ryder Cup has to battle for attention in Chicago, for example, with the Bears and our college football teams.<\/p>\n

That said, the Presidents Cup should provide some intense, fun drama this week\u2014especially if the competition remains close.<\/p>\n

And with so many football games moving to evening kickoffs, it\u2019s going to be easier to check it out.<\/p>\n
