{"id":1630,"date":"2012-05-21T13:10:19","date_gmt":"2012-05-21T13:10:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/janinajacobs.com\/?p=1630"},"modified":"2012-05-21T13:10:19","modified_gmt":"2012-05-21T13:10:19","slug":"how-does-your-food-pantry-stack-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theaposition.com\/janinajacobs\/golf\/1630\/how-does-your-food-pantry-stack-up","title":{"rendered":"How Does Your Food Pantry Stack Up?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1632\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/janinajacobs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2012\/05\/Food-Pantry-shelves.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1632\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1632\" src=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/janinajacobs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2012\/05\/Food-Pantry-shelves-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1632\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A well organized food pantry.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At home, in order to have choices for your daily meals, it is very important to give yourself a fighting chance.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t have basic staples in your pantry and refrigerator, it is impossible to build a meal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You know the story:\u00a0 family members come home and the first thing they say is, \u201cMooooommmm!\u00a0 What have you got to eat?\u201d or, \u201cAwwww, isn\u2019t there ANYTHING good here in the cupboard??\u201d\u00a0 Then boom, it is off to fast-food city or into the snack stash and the poor eating begins.\u00a0 This is certainly true for golfers who are in a rush to get to the course and will scrimp on proper foods.\u00a0 Eat poorly and your performance will suffer. Instead, here are some suggestions to use in stocking a well-appointed pantry so you can be prepared.\u00a0 Keep these items on hand and your family will always have good food to eat\u2026.with a little prep.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Oils and Vinegars<\/strong>: an assortment of olive, canola, and savory oils as well as Balsamic, Red Wine, and flavored vinegars do wonders for snazzing up salads as well as saut\u00e9ing foods.\u00a0 Exotic oils like sesame or walnut oil offer a change of pace, especially for Asian dishes or other ethnic offerings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seasonings and Condiments<\/strong>: my favorites are garlic powder, spice\/herb blends (Cajun and Herbs de Provence), lemon pepper, Mrs. Dash, BBQ sauce, Dijon mustard, Wasabi, Red Hot, salsa; watch the ketchup though: too much sugar and salt, plus the 100 calories per tablespoon is a waste of your daily calorie intake.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Canned Beans<\/strong>: black, navy, red, and Garbanzo all add folate and fiber to your diet.\u00a0 Four bean salads with a vinaigrette dressing and other chopped vegetables is a powerful dose of protein and great to consume before golf.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Assorted Nuts<\/strong>: walnuts, almonds, pecans, pistachios, hazelnuts, and macadamias will all add distinctive taste and elegance to any dish, especially rice. Toast them in the oven for a real treat!\u00a0 pack some in a baggie to stash in your golf bag.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Canned or Vacuum-Packed Fish<\/strong>: tuna and salmon are all great for Omega-3\u2019s and protein.\u00a0 You can put a pouch of tuna in your golf bag too&#8230;..pure protein.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sliced Olives, Artichoke Hearts, Pickles, and Peppers<\/strong>: olives always add a stylish kick to all foods; peppers of any sort pack a flavor blast, and pickles do wonders for staples like potato salad or tuna salad; artichokes create a nice pungency to pastas and chicken dishes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tomato Products<\/strong>: diced tomatoes, tomato sauce (NOT spaghetti sauce though you can use it in a pinch as a supplement \u2013 way too much sugar and salt\u2026.), tomato paste are great for quick pizza toppings, in stews, sauces, and soups. Some have herbs in them already for extra flavor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dried foods<\/strong>: cherries, apricots, raisins, prunes, tomatoes, and mushrooms all provide a great burst of flavor to anything.\u00a0 Morel mushrooms are extravagant, but taste one and you\u2019re done!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chicken Broth and Evaporated Milk<\/strong>: use these for soups and stews; fat free sounds nice but you really do need a little bit of fat to provide maximum flavor.\u00a0 If you buy CostCo or Sam\u2019s Club rotisserie chickens, boil the carcass and save the liquid for homemade broth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rice and Whole Grains<\/strong>: go beyond white rice and try Basmati, Jasmine or other exotics. Grains like couscous, quinoa (pronounced \u2018Keen-wah\u2019), barley, bulgur, lentils, and oatmeal pack super nutrients and can cook up quickly.\u00a0 Make extra so they\u2019re handy to add to your fave dishes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Whole Wheat Pasta<\/strong>: I challenge anyone to know the difference from plain white pasta.\u00a0 Whole wheat is a bit more chewy but as far as taste, it&#8217;s a draw.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sea Salts and Whole Peppercorns<\/strong>: anything you can grind fresh always tastes better.
