The celebration of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 also marks the 200th anniversary of the penning of the words to this song.\u00a0 Some call\u00a0this war\u00a0&#8216;The Forgotten War&#8217; or the &#8216;Second American Revolutionary War&#8217;; others call it the war that &#8216;nobody won&#8217;;\u00a0 some know it as the war during which\u00a0the U.S. Navy first played a starring role;\u00a0 many don&#8217;t know a thing about it.\u00a0 Essentially, the War of 1812\u00a0marked the first time the mighty British Navy was ever truly challenged&#8230;..by the fledgling American nation.\u00a0 Also joining in the fray were France, Canada, and Native Americans.\u00a0\u00a0 Three years later, after all was said and done, nothing essentially had\u00a0changed;\u00a0 borders, possessions, power, and control were virtually unchanged.\u00a0 The only real losers were the Native Americans, who\u00a0had mostly\u00a0decided to\u00a0support the French and British.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\">2012 marks the 200th anniversary of this conflict and the U.S. Navy is celebrating in a big way.\u00a0 Since April, an armada of Navy and tall ships has\u00a0stopped in\u00a0coastal cities along the eastern seaboard for week long celebrations, concerts, events and airshows.\u00a0 The armada will continue visiting cities in the U.S. and Canada\u00a0along the St. Lawrence Seaway and throughout the Great Lakes until October.\u00a0 The fleet stops in Detroit and Windsor\u00a0September 3-10, 2012\u00a0where dozens of activities will bring attention to the U.S. Navy and the tens of thousands of young men and women who serve.\u00a0 For a full schedule and more information, visit\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ourflagwasstillthere.org\">www.ourflagwasstillthere.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\">In Detroit, a few special contests have been added. If\u00a0you\u00a0appreciate what\u00a0the Star Spangled Banner represents and think you can write a great 6th verse relevant to what is\u00a0happening today, get your pens (or computers)\u00a0out.\u00a0 Francis Scott Key\u00a0was compelled to write\u00a0as he observed\u00a0&#8216;bombs bursting in air&#8217;;\u00a0 Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote a virtually unknown 5th verse (see below) during the Civil War.\u00a0 What can YOU write about, considering our conflicts today? Submission deadline is August 15, 2012&#8230;..Michigan residents only.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\"><strong>ENTRY INFORMATION &#8211; STAR SPANGLED BANNER SONG WRITING CONTEST<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Create a new and relevant 6<sup>th<\/sup> verse to the Star Spangled Banner in celebration of the 200<sup>th <\/sup>anniversary of its creation during the War of 1812.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>In cooperation with the U.S. Navy Recruiting District Assistance Council-Michigan (RDAC-MI), the Michigan Council for History Education, and the Michigan War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>WHAT?<\/strong>\u00a0 The Star Spangled Banner became America\u2019s National Anthem in 1931 though it was based on a poem, \u2018<em>The Defence (sic) of Fort McHenry\u2019<\/em> written by Francis Scott Key as he watched the fort\u2019s bombardment from the HMS <em>Tonnant.<\/em> During the Civil War a 5<sup>th<\/sup> verse (see page 2 for lyrics) was added by Oliver Wendell Holmes.\u00a0 For this Bicentennial celebration, there is an opportunity to pen a 6<sup>th<\/sup> verse to be added to this important song.\u00a0 Your knowledge and experiences can be used to create new and relevant content based on current events, pride of the USA, and the recognition of heroes. This song writing contest will allow you to share your vision in shaping the future of the USA and its people<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>WHO?<\/strong>\u00a0 This contest is open to all Michigan residents in two divisions, Adult and Youth.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>WHY?<\/strong> The Bicentennial of the creation of the Star Spangled Banner offers an excellent opportunity for individual participants to learn and share information about all wars.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>HOW?<\/strong>\u00a0 By individually researching key topics surrounding this event and current events you may use resources available at local libraries, museums, and the internet.\u00a0 Then, transfer this learning into song lyrics and submit the work as follows:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A paper version of the lyrics.<\/li>\n<li>Optional DVD performance of this newly created music.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>WHEN?<\/strong>\u00a0 To take advantage of summer vacation time, entries <strong><em>must be postmarked by<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em><strong>Wednesday, August 8, 2012.\u00a0 <\/strong>Any late entry will not be accepted.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>PRIZES<\/strong>:\u00a0 <strong>The Star Spangled Banner Song Writing Contest<\/strong> offers the following awards:<\/p>\n<p>Adult Division (age 18 and over):\u00a0 1<sup>st<\/sup> Place &#8211; $500 and 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Place &#8211; $200<\/p>\n<p>Youth Division (may not have reached age 18 by 11:59pm August 15, 2012)<\/p>\n<p>1<sup>st<\/sup> Place &#8211; $500 and 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Place &#8211; $200<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Awards will be presented at a special event during the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 to be celebrated September 3-10, 2012 in the Metro Detroit area. Photos taken at Awards Ceremonies may be used in publications of the U.S. Navy and other organizations, and may be posted on various websites.\u00a0 There may be additional interviews, biographical information, and news coverage requested by local media and U.S. Navy Community Outreach (NAVCO) or PR personnel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Guidelines for Star Spangled Banner Song Writing Contest:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lyrics should be adaptable to the \u2018official\u2019 Department of Defense version.<\/li>\n<li>A paper copy of the submitted Lyrics is to be included in the submission.<\/li>\n<li>A Video DVD of the performance of this submission of the First and proposed \u00a06<sup>th<\/sup> Verse <em>may<\/em> be included; DVD must be marked with Artist\u2019s name.<\/li>\n<li>An Artist submission form (with Guardian\/Parent Signature if a Minor)<\/li>\n<li>Declaration that the submitted lyrics are original is assumed with Signature on Entry Form.<\/li>\n<li>Declaration that the Artist would be available during 1812 Celebrations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<em>Please note:\u00a0 Failure to follow these guidelines will result in
