{"id":142,"date":"2010-11-27T23:47:09","date_gmt":"2010-11-27T23:47:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jaystuller.com\/?p=142"},"modified":"2014-11-10T20:15:12","modified_gmt":"2014-11-10T20:15:12","slug":"a-tribal-gathering-in-scottsdale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theaposition.com\/jaystuller\/golf\/142\/a-tribal-gathering-in-scottsdale","title":{"rendered":"A Tribal Gathering in Scottsdale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the notable exception of my fine colleagues at The A Position, an awful lot of golf and travel writers are as cynical the cops on <em>Law &amp; Order<\/em>, self-absorbed as supermodels and a black hole around free food and alcohol.\u00a0 But because our reviews and features about destinations, resorts, golf courses and restaurants hold influence over potential customers, we get treated to stuff that we otherwise shouldn\u2019t deserve. As Golf Journalist &amp; Radio Host <a href=\"http:\/\/www.backspinthegolfshow.com\/backspinboys\/meet-the-backspin-boys.html\" target=\"_self\">Bill Huffman<\/a> describes our lot, we are \u201cunderpaid yet over-privileged.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_145\" style=\"width: 261px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/jaystuller\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2010\/11\/images.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-145\" class=\"size-full wp-image-145\" title=\"images\" src=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/jaystuller\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2010\/11\/images.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"251\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-145\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Troon North has twice hosted rounds for the Media Classic.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Next week, more than 80 golf and travel writers will converge on Scottsdale for the ninth annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xonaresort.com\/\" target=\"_self\">Xona Resort Suites Media Golf Classic<\/a>, where we\u2019ll be afforded luxuries usually reserved for those in a much higher pay grade.\u00a0 Hosted by the Xona Resort Suites hotel, the event is underwritten by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottsdalecvb.com\/\" target=\"_self\">Scottsdale Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fountainhillschamber.com\/Visitors\/tabid\/194\/Default.aspx\" target=\"_self\">Fountain Hills &amp; Fort McDowell Visitors Bureau<\/a>, a rotating slate of golf courses, and vendors of wine, spirits and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bridgestonegolf.com\/\" target=\"_self\">Bridgestone <\/a>golf balls.\u00a0 For five days we fan out to some of area\u2019s best public and private courses for competition and camaraderie, and in the evenings pound down freely poured adult beverages while plowing through enough food to fatten Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p>For a handful of journalists fortunate enough to have attended all eight of the previous Classics, it is clearly the highlight of our golf year.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, there\u2019s nothing quite like the Scottsdale Classic in that space where journalism intersects with hospitality, leisure, food and golf.\u00a0 In the week before the Masters, the Golf Writers Association of America holds a brief tournament and a dinner, and yet the members don\u2019t have the time, or frankly the business need to hang out together, since they share information while on assignment at tournaments.\u00a0 While small groups of travel and golf writers see each other on \u201cfamiliarity trips\u201d to specific locations, the Classic is the singular major gathering of the year.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a place to catch up, share war stories and discover new business leads, the latter a critical thing in a profession as plagued by underemployment as any other.\u00a0 It\u2019s also part of the seldom-discussed process by which authoritative and interpretive golf and travel information gets to consumers.\u00a0 And it\u2019s why astute readers might sense an uptick in the number of Arizona stories that start appearing shortly after Holiday Season.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">The Chemists<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_146\" style=\"width: 239px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/jaystuller\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2010\/11\/ImageHandler1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-146\" class=\"size-full wp-image-146\" title=\"ImageHandler\" src=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/jaystuller\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2010\/11\/ImageHandler1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"229\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-146\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The main fountain is a Fountain Hills landmark.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The brainchild of Huffman, the Classic blossomed almost from the moment he presented the idea to Resort Suites\u2019 founder and former owner, Gordon Zuckerman, and his crack marketing expert, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seasawmarketing.com\" target=\"_self\">Melissa Linden<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cGordon had once hosted a trip for several journalists and couldn\u2019t stop talking about how much fun he had,\u201d Huffman recalls. \u201cHe called the writers \u2018the chemists\u2019 because he said they\u2019d \u2018stir the broth that got other golfers to visit.\u2019\u201d Resort Suites had always maintained an ambitious advertising program, but Zuckerman came to believe that additional editorial coverage built trust and grew the number of paying customers.<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of September 11, the initial Classic of 2002 wasn\u2019t the greatest moment to promote travel. \u00a0Resort Suites couldn\u2019t be certain of how much coverage the event would generate from the eclectic individuals who work for magazines, newspapers, radio stations, wire services, television stations and Web sites.\u00a0 \u201cBut Gordon didn\u2019t worry about specific assignments or an output,\u201d Huffman recalls. \u201cHe told everyone on his staff to just show the journalists a great time and they\u2019d write about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some journalists produced stories that appeared a week after the Classic.\u00a0 Others didn\u2019t get the chance to write about Scottsdale or a specific course until a few years later. \u00a0But Zuckerman understood the long-term dynamics.\u00a0 \u201cWe know that several layouts ended up on \u2018best course\u2019 lists because the writers who attended talked about their experiences with many of their colleagues and editors,\u201d Huffman explains.<\/p>\n<p>Although Zuckerman sold the property several years ago, the new ownership remodeled much of the hotel, re-branded it as Xona Resort Suites, and retained the first-class nature of the Media Classic.\u00a0 Indeed, the rotation for this year\u2019s event starts with a practice round at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.desertforestgolfclub.com\/\" target=\"_self\">Desert Forest<\/a> in the community of Carefree.\u00a0 An elite private club, Desert Forest is Arizona&#8217;s oldest true desert layout and since 1967 has been a fixture on <em>Golf Digest&#8217;s<\/em> &#8220;Top 100 Courses in America&#8221; list.\u00a0 We\u2019ll also play the Superstition Mountain\u00a0Golf &amp; Country Club course, the original <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wekopa.com\/custom.asp?id=236&amp;page=4517\" target=\"_self\">We-Ko-Pa Cholla<\/a> course, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/troongolfaz.com\/Arizona-Southern-Dunes-Golf_aa95.html?gclid=CKGE1Y6UwqUCFRBzgwodIRZeZw\" target=\"_self\">Southern Dunes Golf Club<\/a>, which annually hosts both U.S. Open and PGA Tour qualifying.<\/p>\n<p>Granted, we are spoiled, a point often made by friends not in the business.\u00a0 Then again, quite a few golf publications pay wages that by comparison make farm labor ridiculously attractive. \u00a0The experiences, then, are the primary reward.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_143\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/jaystuller\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2010\/11\/droppedImage_9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-143\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-143\" title=\"droppedImage_9\" src=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/jaystuller\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2010\/11\/droppedImage_9-300x235.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"235\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-143\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Taliesin West<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While a few of the travel-only writers will tour Frank Lloyd Wright\u2019s Taliesin West, old downtown Scottsdale, or hang out at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fairmont.com\/scottsdale\" target=\"_self\">Fairmont Princess<\/a> next door to Xona Resort Suites, most of us will concentrate on staying out of Arizona\u2019s rough.\u00a0 After all, a tee shot that strays be only a few feet off \u00a0a fairway takes one into the territory of poisonous snakes, mean-looking javelina and jumping cactus. \u00a0No one complains, at least once the sharp-pointed needles are removed from the buttocks.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">A Delicate Dance<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a certain symbiosis between journalists and the hospitality industry that doesn\u2019t get talked about all that much in public.\u00a0 Convincing someone to write about a course, resort or piece of equipment is what\u2019s known in the marketing trade as \u201cearned media,\u201d and experts figure it\u2019s worth two or three times comparable space for paid advertising.\u00a0 Since the publications that cover travel expenses and pay decent fees are an endangered species, the destinations often help out to some degree, and especially for small outlets.\u00a0\u00a0 In the pure journalism world of <em>The New York Times<\/em>, that would be a conflict of interest.<\/p>\n<p>In the real world where most of us live, it\u2019s up to an ethical writer to craft a legitimate piece that\u2019s informative, fair to readers and subject alike, but doesn\u2019t read like a fluffy press release.\u00a0 At times this is an uneasy dance, because an accurate appraisal might mean stepping on a toe or two.\u00a0 And if one encounters really bad service and bed bugs, it\u2019s probably best to tell the proprietor <em>why<\/em> a story is <em>not <\/em>being written, giving those folks who are just trying to make a living a second chance.<\/p>\n<p>The Media Golf Classic makes it easy to balance the factors. Everyone is charged a modest entry fee and participants need to pay for their own transportation to Scottsdale.\u00a0 Rooms, golf and food are covered, unless an employer wants to pay the expense. \u00a0\u00a0Notes Huffman: \u201cWe believe this arrangement frees the participants to write honestly about what they do and see.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_151\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/jaystuller\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2010\/11\/Pavilion-Meeting.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-151\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-151\" title=\"Pavilion Meeting\" src=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/jaystuller\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2010\/11\/Pavilion-Meeting-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-151\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The singing cowboy has moseyed on, but this is the spot in the Xona Resort Suite Pavilion where he and his horse performed at the 2002 Classic. <\/p><\/div>\n<p>Since 2002 the events and sights have largely been memorable.\u00a0 No one who attended the first Classic will forget the guitar-playing cowboy singing <em>Ghost Riders in the Sky<\/em> while perched on the back of a <em>very real horse<\/em> in an <em>indoor<\/em> pavilion.
