At 214 feet below sea level in California’s Death Valley, Furnace Creek is the lowest elevation golf course in the world.<\/p><\/div>\n

While golf routinely subjects players to psychological highs and lows, an upcoming Summer Solstice limited-field event will also expose participants to California\u2019s most extreme physical<\/em> conditions. In what\u2019s called the Hell 2 Heaven Golf Challenge, 36 two-person teams compete over 36 holes played in a single day, at the depths of Death Valley in the morning and then at the state\u2019s highest elevation course at Mammoth Lakes.<\/p>\n

\u201cFurnace Creek in Death Valley and Sierra Star at Mammoth are two of the most contrasting golf courses you\u2019ll find on the planet,\u201d says Robert Kaufman, chief architect of the tournament. \u201cDuring my global travels I\u2019m always searching for out-of-the-box golf experiences. Luckily, I discovered one right here in California, where Mother Nature created some unbelievable landscapes that backdrop an event that simply cannot be duplicated anywhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n

Benefiting the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Southern California Golf Associations Junior Golf program, the Hell 2 Heaven Challenge is scheduled for June 21, the date of the Northern Hemisphere\u2019s maximum daylight.<\/p>\n

At $1,900 for each two-member team, the entire event is actually a three-day and two-night affair. It officially starts in Las Vegas, where participants board a deluxe motor coach headed for Death Valley. (Players can also drive directly to the event themselves.)<\/p>\n

After spending the night at Death Valley National Park, golfers attack the Challenge\u2019s purported Hell, over the 18 holes of the Furnace Creek Golf Club, which at 214 feet below sea level is the world\u2019s lowest elevated course. While summer temperatures routinely exceed 115 degrees Fahrenheit during afternoons, Furnace Creek\u2019s fairways are actually generous and quite lush.<\/p>\n

At more than 8,000 feet, Sierra Star is shines in its eponymous mountain range.<\/p><\/div>\n

At the conclusion of the morning round, players re-board the motor coach for a more than four-hour drive up and into the majestic Eastern Sierra and a slice of elevated Heaven. At some 8,000 feet above sea level, Sierra Star Golf Club is California\u2019s highest track, part of a four-season recreational playground. \u201cBetween these elevation extremes,\u201d suggest Kaufman, \u201cclub selection and distance judgment is going make or break quite a few scores.\u201d<\/p>\n

The benefit is open to golfers of all skill levels. As noted, the cost for a two-person team is $1,900, but the event is also open to singles, at $950, who will be paired with other individual players. The all-inclusive package includes two nights of accommodations, the two rounds of golf, transportation, meals, a tee-prize package, and much more.<\/p>\n

The winning team earns a 4-day & 3-night golf getaway package for four, at The Boulders Resort & Spa in Carefree, Arizona.<\/p>\n
