{"id":58,"date":"2010-09-01T22:22:12","date_gmt":"2010-09-01T22:22:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jaystuller.com\/?p=58"},"modified":"2013-05-10T18:15:58","modified_gmt":"2013-05-10T18:15:58","slug":"name-that-sound","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theaposition.com\/jaystuller\/golf\/58\/name-that-sound","title":{"rendered":"Name That Sound"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_59\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/jaystuller\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2010\/09\/golf_cup.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-59\" title=\"golf_cup\" src=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/jaystuller\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2010\/09\/golf_cup-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-59\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">And the noise this is about to make . . ?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For the vast majority of golfers, there is one sound that is the sport&#8217;s sweetest. \u00a0Its better than hitting a flushed drive, or a even hearing a notorious tightwad utter, &#8220;I&#8217;m buying.&#8221; \u00a0It is aural magic of a Surlyn-covered sphere hitting metal and\/or plastic, echoing from the depths of that four-and-one-quarter inch in diameter hole, preferably after a pure and curling right-to-left roll that covers 20 feet.<\/p>\n<p>While few of us will ever be the target of the roar on Augusta&#8217;s 18th green for the winner of the Masters, all golfers have at one time or another heard that plunk. \u00a0Or is it a thunk? \u00a0Or, perhaps, kerchunk?<\/p>\n<p>My friend, Dr. Joe Allen, asked that question the other day. \u00a0Just about everything in golf has a name and a dozen or more synonyms, from an ace to a chunk; a hook that&#8217;s also called a little snapper; \u00a0a banana ball and a breakfast ball, with the latter usually following the former. \u00a0But the retired Northern California dentist noted that he&#8217;d never heard an official word for the auditory magnificence of a putt dropping to the bottom of a cup. \u00a0Me neither.<\/p>\n<p>Golfers make up lots of terms. \u00a0We have the &#8220;Mukai par,&#8221; after our pal who can knock a drive out of bounds only to have it hit a power line and bounce back into playable rough, hack it into a fairway bunker, knock it 100 feet distant from the hole and then drain a chip. \u00a0Only Mukai routinely makes Mukai pars, and he does more often than normal odds allow normal golfers. \u00a0So around my neighborhood it&#8217;s an official term with official meaning.<\/p>\n<p>But what of the noise made by a golf ball dropping into a cup? \u00a0It&#8217;s a shared and meaningful experience among players of all abilities.
