These aren’t simple questions, but they’re essential. We often spend our lives focused on achievements, security, and routine. But eventually, we all reach a point where we start to wonder: What’s next? and What am I really here to do?

This is where a little reflection can make a big difference. Life isn’t just about existing—it’s about meaning and purpose. Many wise people across different spiritual paths believe our time on Earth is precious, a unique opportunity to grow, give, and prepare for whatever comes next.

What Is Your “Exit Strategy”?

Now, let’s talk about that “exit strategy.” It sounds a bit intense, right? But an exit strategy in spiritual terms is simply about thinking where you want to go when you leave this life and what you want to leave behind. It’s not necessarily about death, but about the legacy of your life, the spirit of it.

Think of the Dalai Lama, who says, “Our prime purpose in this life is to help others.” He’s a reminder that part of an exit strategy might include making the world better because you were here. Imagine if, when you leave, people remember you not for what you owned but for how you made them feel, how you inspired, or how you helped.

So, ask yourself: How do I want to be remembered? and What kind of impact do I want to have on the people around me?

Why Are You Still Here?

If you’re still here, there’s a reason. Many spiritual traditions say that life doesn’t happen by accident, that each of us has a unique purpose or lesson to fulfill. In Christianity, there’s the idea that “To everything, there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven.” Buddhism speaks of karma, suggesting that every action and moment of life has meaning. Each breath is an opportunity to fulfill that purpose.

This purpose doesn’t have to be a grand mission. Sometimes, it’s just about making life a little better for someone else, practicing kindness, or finding joy in small moments. You don’t need to save the world. Start small—your purpose might be as simple as being a loving friend, a caring parent, or someone who brings peace to those around them.

If you’re not sure what your purpose is, ask yourself: What am I passionate about? What makes me feel truly alive? These are clues to what you’re meant to be doing.

What Are You Doing With Your Time Here?

Let’s be honest: most of us spend a lot of time distracted, stressed, or just “getting through” the day. But if our time on Earth is limited, shouldn’t we make the most of it? Meditation, mindfulness, or just taking a few minutes each day to reflect can help us use our time in a more meaningful way.

In his book The Power of Now, spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle explains, “Realize deeply that the present moment is all you ever have.” This means that while we’re here, our most powerful tool is the time we have right now. We often worry about what’s next, but true fulfillment comes from making the most of the present. Try focusing on what’s right in front of you—relationships, small acts of kindness, or learning something new.

Ask yourself: Am I spending my time in ways that bring me closer to who I want to be? and What could I let go of that doesn’t serve my deeper purpose?

How Will You Get Where You Want to Go?

So, what’s next? How do you live in a way that aligns with your purpose and prepares you for what’s beyond? Some people find peace in meditation, some in prayer, and others in simple acts of kindness. If you’re unsure, try exploring different paths and see what resonates with you.

You don’t need to have all the answers, but a commitment to personal growth can make each day meaningful. Reflect on what gives your life depth and pursue it. Allow yourself to explore, learn, and forgive—both yourself and others.

As the spiritual teacher Ram Dass put it, “We’re all just walking each other home.” We’re here to grow together, support each other, and make the journey meaningful. So ask yourself: How can I walk my path with compassion, courage, and curiosity?

A Call to Action: Living with Purpose

Here’s my challenge for you: take a step today that brings you closer to who you want to be. Whether it’s reaching out to an old friend, starting a new hobby, practicing gratitude, or simply reflecting on your purpose, commit to making your time on Earth meaningful.

Remember, life isn’t about rushing to the end; it’s about making the journey count. Every day, you have a chance to live a life that aligns with your purpose, brings joy to others, and prepares your spirit for whatever comes next. So, what will you do today to start creating the legacy you want to leave?

Bob Fagan has just published “The Little Book of Questions That Matter — A Lifetime Companion For Transforming Your Life.” It is available on Amazon.
