Imperial’s Coolcore Collection<\/p><\/div>\n

As an aging baby boomer who\u2019s an avid golfer, I wear hats. My closet is filled with them, boasting logos of various courses, brands and tournaments. Most importantly, I got the message a long time ago that the sun\u2019s rays are harmful if not lethal to one\u2019s skin. So if you see me playing golf without a hat, it\u2019s because I probably forgot it as I rushed out the door. (Note: always store several hats in one\u2019s car.)<\/p>\n

I favor two styles: one, is a wider brim hat that provides good shade and cover to my face and ears; and two, is the ever popular ball cap style that dominates the top tier of my closet. The former is always selected on sunny, hot days when I\u2019ll be playing a full round while the latter is favored for cloudy days and shorter stints out on the course. I also like the ball cap style for 19th holes, especially outdoors, when reviewing the day\u2019s round. (And yes, I do observe indoor hat etiquette so long as my hair is reasonably dry and coherent and not resembling Don King.)<\/p>\n

In the heat of the 2015 Michigan summer, I\u2019ve been wearing a new hat that\u2019s as cool for its style and as it is for its comfort. It\u2019s by Imperial, a longtime leader in headwear that\u2019s celebrating its Centennial next year. At first, I was skeptical about wearing a black hat that\u2019s 100% polyester. But what separates this Imperial hat from its competitors is its patented Coolcore fabric. Coolcore hats are designed to wick moisture away from the head, move it throughout the hat and then regulate evaporation. According to product information, the result is reducing surface fabric temperature up to 30 percent, compared to skin temperature. I can\u2019t attest to that figure but anecdotally this hat is cooler than anything else in my collection.<\/p>\n

As an added plus in this age of natural materials and processes, Coolcore delivers this inherent fabric property without the aid of chemicals or additives that might wash out or degrade over time.<\/p>\n

On really hot and muggy days, here\u2019s a routine that works like magic to beat the heat with this hat: just splash some water directly on it. Then just give it a shake before donning it. Presto! You\u2019ve just sped up the cooling effect.<\/p>\n

The model I\u2019ve been wearing is a soft-structured profile with a micro-velcro elastic loop closure. Nicely, one size fits all. Suggested retail price is $30.<\/p>\n

And in the case of the best of both worlds, the Coolcore Collection (which boasts structured hats and visors) also includes a wider brim bucket hat model called Old Norse.<\/p>\n

Yep, cooler heads will prevail with this smart line of Imperial hats. And by the way, Imperial, happy 100th birthday!<\/p>\n
