Clubhead speed is down to 90 or less, hands do not grip so firmly, many shots are lower. Handicap is up and distance is down. Sometimes the knee or the back hurts.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The spine does not torque\/turn as much. Putting lines are not seen as clearly.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Pants have shrunk, especially at the waistline.<\/p>\n<p>The first challenge is always the same: denial.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As Bobby Jones once said, \u201cThe toughest part of the course is the six inches between your ears.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Our game is just telling us the truth. Things have changed.<\/p>\n<p>The toughest hurdle is often the memory of how we used to do it, and facing we cannot do it that way anymore.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Turning the ball right or left, at will.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Hitting those high, soft irons.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Seeing the putting lines like they were lit paths to the hole.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Those were the days.<\/p>\n<p>Well, get over it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We aren\u2019t as good as we used to be.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But we can still be great at it, and have fun, too. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Things have changed, and so must we.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s my humbly submitted list of suggestions to make golf more enjoyable in one\u2019s senior years.<\/p>\n<p><b>Face the facts with a PGA Professional<\/b><\/p>\n<p>First, find out where you really are.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Go to a PGA Professional and get some accurate swing analysis.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Obtain the data on your clubhead speed, launch angle, and swing plane.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>PGA Professionals use technology, some just use their eyes. But their assessment will be invaluable.<\/p>\n<p>Learn your real distances with various clubs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Most don\u2019t go as far as we think, and not nearly as far as we remember.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Forget the big numbers on the bottom of the club and focus on the degrees of loft.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Stop comparing your 7-iron distance with your buddy\u2019s.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Hit the 6-iron, get on the green and make the birdie.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When buddies are paying off the bets for your \u201cskin,\u201d you won\u2019t care which club you used to do it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3947\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/teemoore\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/07\/Callaway-paradym-hybrdsjpg.jpeg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3947\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3947\" class=\"wp-image-3947 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/teemoore\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/07\/Callaway-paradym-hybrdsjpg.jpeg\" alt=\"Hybrids are a must for seniors\" width=\"640\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theaposition.com\/teemoore\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/07\/Callaway-paradym-hybrdsjpg.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/theaposition.com\/teemoore\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/07\/Callaway-paradym-hybrdsjpg-300x150.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3947\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hybrids are a must for seniors<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>Clubs<\/b><\/p>\n<p>If your clubs are more than three years old, consider buying new or newer \u201cused\u201d ones, budget and spouse permitting. We\u2019ve changed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The clubs have changed, and they get better every year. Get rid of your 3-wood and all irons below #4, maybe even below #6.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Most of us aren\u2019t good enough to use those anymore.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Substitute some hybrids for those lower numbered irons.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Some manufacturers are helping us make this change. Many are now producing the \u201c3-HL\u201d fairway metal\u2014it\u2019s really a 4-wood loft, but it allows us to think we\u2019re still hitting a spoon.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Higher lofts make it easier to hit it straighter, with better accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>Also, get rid of those scotch blade irons.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Strong perimeter weighting is essential.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It helps to compensate for weaknesses and those off-center hits. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Forget any prejudice against \u201cGame Improvement Clubs.\u201d Do we want to \u201cimprove?\u201d Well, that settles that.<\/p>\n<p>We do need at least three wedges\u2014maybe four.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One of \u201cnormal\u201d loft, one \u201cin-between\u201d gap loft, and a sand wedge with so much loft, flange and bounce that anyone could get out of a greenside bunker with it. You\u2019re missing more greens, and good scores depend on getting up and down, now more than ever. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Putters are highly individual choices, but most of us now do better with one a little longer (35\u201d) so we can stand taller and go easier on our backs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Most of us also do better with a perimeter weighted putter head (thank you, Karsten Solheim), and with an aiming device\u2014a line, dot, two balls, something, anything to help us put the ball in the center of the club face.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Experiment with several, and then use the one that works best for you.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But, if you\u2019re still using that Bullseye model you had in high school, it\u2019s time to retire it. Unless of course, you remain a deadeye with it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3950\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/teemoore\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/07\/s-l1200.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3950\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3950\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3950\" src=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/teemoore\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/07\/s-l1200-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Vintage Patty Berg woods\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theaposition.com\/teemoore\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/07\/s-l1200-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/theaposition.com\/teemoore\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/07\/s-l1200-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theaposition.com\/teemoore\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/07\/s-l1200-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/theaposition.com\/teemoore\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/07\/s-l1200-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/theaposition.com\/teemoore\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/07\/s-l1200-175x130.jpg 175w, https:\/\/theaposition.com\/teemoore\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2023\/07\/s-l1200.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3950\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vintage Patty Berg woods<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>Shafts<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Most of us don\u2019t think much past \u201cregular\u201d or \u201cstiff.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And many shops do not stock much more.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But most of us should not be using either of those.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When we were little kids, some of us used \u201cladies\u201d clubs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One of my first sets of used clubs were Wilson Patty Bergs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>More flex and less weight than what were then \u201cnormal\u201d (i.e., men\u2019s) clubs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They worked better then, because, as kids, we had less strength and a slower swing speed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Sound familiar now?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Back to the future.<\/p>\n<p>The two principal variables are flex and weight.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If you\u2019re not using an \u201cA\u201d flex and a weight of 50-55 grams, you should try them. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Grips<\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Despite being the only direct connection between us and the ball, grips get almost no attention.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Most of us are still using whatever grips put there by the manufacturer when we first bought the clubs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Thus, most of them are \u201cstandard\u201d diameters (usually about .600\u201d), standard weight (50gm), plain rubber composition, and usually a common color like black.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We do not often change them and hardly ever clean them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We are often surprised to learn that there are hundreds of different grips, with dozens of configurations and specifications, in every color of the rainbow.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Two of the most important variations are diameter and tactility.<\/p>\n<p>Diameter can vary to include both less than \u201cstandard\u201d (.600\u201d), and greater.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Narrower grips (usually about .580\u201d) promote an easier release but are sometimes more difficult for weaker hands to hold firm enough.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Wider (or thicker) grips commonly come in at least two variations:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Mid-size (+1\/16\u201d) and Jumbo\/ Over-size (+1\/8\u201d). The bigger ones are much easier to hold, especially for fingers with a bit of arthritis. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We all know nothing feels better and gives more confidence than a new set of grips.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Like the smell of upholstery in a new car.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That is why we should change\/ renew grips about every 20 rounds or so. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If not new, clean is the next best thing. When did you last clean your grips? Between grip changes, we should clean the grips every few rounds, just like we clean the clubs. All it takes is a spot of dishwashing detergent and warm water, with a nylon brush. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Balls<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Those Pro-Vs and \u201cTour\u201d balls are not for us. Most of us need something with less spin, softer feel, and greater distance.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Try a low spin and \u201csoft\u201d ball to learn the difference. Putts are 20-25% of the shots, on a good day.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What does it say about where to spend your practice time?<\/p>\n<p>We should spend most of range time with the 9-iron, wedges, and putter.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If we can pitch, chip and putt, we can compete with anybody.<\/p>\n<p>We should also \u201cwarm up\u201d before we play.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Just 10 or 20 swings can make a big difference, loosening up those tired muscles, and learning which swing we are using that day.<\/p>\n<p>If the \u201cwarm up\u201d is not available, then we should chip a few balls, and putt a few.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>At least get a feel for some club, and impact on the center of the club face.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We should never allow that first tee shot to be our first shot of the day.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tee It Forward<\/b><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no fun banging away with a hybrid for our second shot on most every par-four, nor to need a hybrid on most every par-three.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Wouldn\u2019t we like to hit some irons to more Greens-in-Regulation (GIRs), and have some birdie putts every round? <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The solution is easy\u2014Tee It Forward!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Move up one set of tees.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The USGA, The PGA, Jack Nicklaus, everybody is asking us to do that. It\u2019s not running miles, nor lifting weights.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>No, it\u2019s just stretching the body, especially the legs and back every day. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>All it takes is 20-30 minutes on the floor while you watch the news each morning.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Three or four painless exercises will do the trick.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Try it for a week, and see if you don\u2019t feel better. See your turn and swing arc improve, too. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There you have it, my thoughts on dealing with aging and golf.
