{"id":588,"date":"2012-07-14T10:25:17","date_gmt":"2012-07-14T15:25:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tomharack.com\/?p=588"},"modified":"2012-07-23T07:59:12","modified_gmt":"2012-07-23T12:59:12","slug":"burn-fat-play-golf-longer-part-iii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theaposition.com\/tomharack\/golf\/588\/burn-fat-play-golf-longer-part-iii","title":{"rendered":"Burn Fat, Play Golf Longer, Part III"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The third and final installment of progress reports from a weight-loss program designed for golfers.<\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The results may seem contradictory: Having participated, with fluctuating fidelity, in weight-loss coach Larry Jacobs\u2019 program designed with golfers in mind, I\u2019m persuaded that I\u2019ll probably never be a strict adherent to the dietary regimen he espouses. Even so, I recommend <a href=\"http:\/\/thingolfer.com\/\">\u201cWeight Loss for Golfers\u201d <\/a>unequivocally.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, maybe I <em>could<\/em> eventually be a poster boy for the program \u2013 just not a golf writer at the same time. The past couple of months have embraced both the <a title=\"Burn Fat, Play Golf Longer\" href=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/tomharack\/golf\/golf\/552\/burn-fat-play-golf-longer\">surprisingly facile adherence to Jacobs\u2019 precepts<\/a> and attendance at the fun-filled, suds-drenched Festival of Beer, sponsored by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanclubresort.com\/\">The American Club<\/a>, in Kohler, Wisconsin; the foreswearing of dairy products and indulgence in a colossal, seven-course dinner at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldgolfrenaissance.com\/Dining\/\">Villagio Italian Grille at the Renaissance World Golf Village Resort<\/a>, in St. Augustine, Florida.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_591\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/tomharack\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2012\/07\/image009.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-591\" class=\"size-full wp-image-591\" src=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/tomharack\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2012\/07\/image009.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"587\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-591\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Planning to lose weight but reluctant to puncture your belt to make it fit? Try Nexbelt. Unlike the standard peg-and-hole configuration, its ratcheting system allows for adjustments in quarter-inch increments for sizes from 28 to 42 inches; and in XL sizes, from 38 to 50 inches.  <\/p><\/div>\n<p>Jacobs posits that you can maintain a fat-burning metabolism as long as consumption of \u201cunapproved\u201d foods doesn\u2019t exceed about 15 percent of total intake. Accordingly, I\u2019d be summarily DQed by either of the aforementioned splurges. Still, the \u201cWeight Loss for Golfers\u201d program has been the transformative experience I had hoped for in <a title=\"Burn Fat, Play Golf Longer, Part II\" href=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/tomharack\/golf\/golf\/563\/burn-fat-play-golf-longer-part-ii\">my last progress report,<\/a> since:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 While my weight \u2013 and more important, body mass index \u2013 may to some degree seesaw, the program has established a new, lower set point, a new \u201cnormal\u201d in terms of pounds and girth. Obviously, it\u2019s easier to raise one\u2019s set point than to lower it; so although the lower set point isn\u2019t necessarily permanent, it is a significant improvement, different than, say, the result of a three-day fast.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Exactly how much I\u2019ve reduced blood-sugar levels won\u2019t be determined until the next round of hematology. But there\u2019s reason for optimism, as my blood pressure has indeed been lowered by an average of 15-20 mmHG in both systolic and diastolic indices.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Beyond any metrics for the program\u2019s benefits, \u201cWeight Loss for Golfers\u201d has instilled a new perspective on nutrition and a new clarity relative to the frequently confusing debate on how best to address weight control. (My A Position colleague, Bob Fagan, recently wrote about <a href=\"http:\/\/theaposition.com\/Articles\/33\/8270\/1\/The-Skinny-on-Fat\">the immense ramifications<\/a>, pun intended, of the problem.)
