More than a snapshot or a forkful of food, traditional local music provokes an authentic \u201csense of place\u201d at travel destinations. It\u2019s a mariachi band that gives life to a margarita in Mexico; and in the Caribbean, it\u2019s the sound of a steel drum set that scores the seafront setting. Beer goes best with an \u201coom-pah-pah\u201d beat at Oktoberfest; and there was a time no one went to Honolulu without seeing Do Ho sing in a Hawaiian shirt.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of the most romantic music in the world comes from France,\u201d said Andy Buelow, Executive Director of the West Michigan Symphony Orchestra. Hearing an accordionist squeeze out \u201cLa Vie En Rose\u201d while walking the Champs Elysess is a quintessentially French moment, but travelers can do better when visiting Paris by catching an intimate, evening cabaret performance at Lapin Agile, a place of intriguing entertainment in the Montmartre district since 1860 and made initially famous by a Picasso painting. Do not visit the City of Light without popping in for a set or two and a glass of sherry.<\/p>\n

While peering down at Lisbon\u2019s panoramic skyline from the hotel\u2019s roof, he warned, \u201cFado music is very soulful but please understand the songs can be very sad. They\u2019re about the lifelong consequences of fate and loss.\u201d<\/p>\n

Buelow saluted the traditional Fado genre. \u201cLonging is one of those emotions which is very close to joy,\u201d he insisted. \u201cThere is a lot of longing in music.\u201d<\/p>\n

An Irish music session is very similarly melancholy, especially \u201csean nos:\u201d solo singing which is unaccompanied and unamplified, and in the ancient Irish language. Benner\u2019s Hotel, in scenic Dingle, Country Kerry, like the Tivoli Avenida Liberdade in Lisbon, is right in the heart of the entertainment each night. From the old world charm of the hotel\u2019s Mrs. Benner\u2019s Bar, guests can virtually stumble (and after a few pints of Guinness often do) into the charming Irish fishing village\u2019s many nightly live music sessions performed by roving musicians in weathered pubs such as O\u2019Flaherty\u2019s, John Benny\u2019s, Dick Mack\u2019s and An Droichead Beag (The Small Bridge.)<\/p>\n
