(Photo by: Harrison Shiels)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>English scones are making a \u201cBritish invasion\u201d in America &#8211; supplanting donuts, muffins and bagels as the breakfast bite of the discriminating diner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScones bring an air of international sophistication to tea or coffee. They are a cultural experience,\u201d said Chef Vera Ambrose, a Michigan State University School of Hotel\/Restaurant Management alum who said her special scones have been the calling card of her Ambrosia Gourmet Catering company for years, and now during the Coronavirus quarantine, are being warmly embraced. \u201cPeople are suddenly in love with scones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Discovery has brought debate, though.<\/p>\n<p>Larry David, the comic who plays himself on his HBO hit series\u00a0<em>Curb Your Enthusiasm<\/em>, has a scone subplot running through the latest season. David insists to \u201cMocha Joe,\u201d a Los Angeles coffeehouse owner, the scones he serves are too soft.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cScones are supposed to be hard. Yours are like a muffin,\u201d he moans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s supposed to be fresh,\u201d Mocha Joe retorts<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, fresh-hard,\u201d David insists. \u201cI\u2019m not quite sure you know what a scone is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David subsequently seeks out the pastry chef at New York\u2019s Waldorf Astoria Hotel &#8211; which David complained had inadequate air conditioning and small bathtubs &#8211; but baked the best scones.<\/p>\n<p>Michiganders needn\u2019t go to L.A. or New York to taste the tradition and sample a scone thanks to Chef Ambrose who now ships and delivers to individuals and corporations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA proper scone should be both crunchy and moist, said Ambrose, who traveled to England and Ireland to perfect her recipe. \u201cI use only organic heavy cream, which is like \u2018liquid gold,\u2019 and Plugra European-style, slow-churned butter. He now lives in Bloomfield Hills. \u201cScone Queen\u201d is the term columnist Neal Rubin dubbed Ambrose with, and Detroit \u201croyalty,\u201d Mayor Mike Duggan, loves Ambrose\u2019s scones. She recently catered a party he staged for former Vice-President Joe Biden. Ambrose\u2019s scones were a hit with Hall of Fame radio host Dick Purtan, to whom she recently delivered a box ordered by his daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople love getting scones as gifts because getting a package of scones is a great surprise. It\u2019s an experience not just a product. Sending scones to someone is sending love,\u201d said Ambrose, who has been filling home delivery and gift orders throughout Mid-Michigan and Southeast Michigan during the Covid lockdown. \u201cPeople need love now \u2013 and sending a package of scones to someone is sharing love. It\u2019s putting it right on their porch. She then opened her Bloomfield Hills-based company catering to corporations and celebrities at higher-end events for the past 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>Ben and Jerry, the famed ice cream titans, began the same way. They searched for a \u201cbig city trend\u201d and then took it to a small Vermont college town.
