Every once in awhile I receive an email that brings equal amounts of surprise and wonder.
I don’t know how he tracked me down, but last week, a retired 70-year-old in Wilmington, Del. sent me a brief note.
“I finished the top 100 courses,” it read. “Thanks for writing the book. I enjoyed it and the courses. There a story today (Sept. 22) in the Monterey Herald.” ...

I’ll come right out and say it. Next to Pebble Beach, my favorite course in California is Pasatiempo Golf Club.
In the wake of a 10-year restoration led by Tom Doak and Jim Urbina, Pasatiempo, described by Doak as “the most personal of (Alister) Mackenzie’s designs,” is like a fuzzy photograph that’s been brought into focus by an expert restorer. The golf course, one of the ...

The par-three 18th at Pasatiempo is far from a let-down.

The other time I played Yale was in the late ‘80s or early ‘90s. I think. In those days, ...

The sublime uphill par-3 third hole at Pasatiempo. It is a difficult hole from any tee. (Courtesy of Rob Babcock/Pasatiempo Golf Club)
Pasatiempo Golf Club in the mighty redwoods and canyons overlooking the beach town of Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay remains the best example of the genius of architect Alister Mackenzie that is open to the public today. The dream of Marion ...

Someone had a great idea. Create a package that lets you play two really good courses that couldn’t be more fun or more different, and are only 25 miles apart.
You have to go to California to do it, but trust me: It’s worth the trip.
The two courses are Pasatiempo and CordeValle, both on Golf Digest’s list of Top 100 public tracks, and both in the ...
