“Mr. Cub” Ernie Banks tees off for charity at BMW Championship

Hall of Famer Banks hits two at Wrigley Field

Chicago Cubs Hall of Famer Ernie Banks, a long-time Tour Edge player, opened the 2011 BMW Championship this week by shooting for a hole-in-one from the Wrigley Field stands onto the field for a $100,000 scholarship for an Evans Scholar.

Mr. Cub and defending BMW champion Dustin Johnson each fired two shots from a platform built at the top Wrigley’s right field bleachers. They were shooting for a 20-foot circular target surrounding a cup placed in the left field.

Neither Banks nor Johnson carded the ace, but BMW still contributed $10,000 to the Evans Scholar Program.

The BMW Championship begins Thursday at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club in Lemont, Ill., when the top 70 players on the PGA Tour compete in the Tour’s FedEx Cup.
