Phil Mickelson proved to be a good company man at the end of the Shell Houston Open. Lefty made sure to thank his equipment sponsor, Callaway Golf, for its help in winning the event by three strokes.
‘This week is a great example of why I believe, in 2004, signing with Callaway was the best decision I ever made for my career,’’ Mickelson said. “Because when I had a bit of an issue, the head of R & D (Alan Hocknell) flew out, and because I’ve been experimenting with a couple drivers, he wanted to make sure I had the right ones.’’
For the record, Mickelson used Callaway’s RAZR driver – maybe the best Callaway driver in years – and hit 78 percent of fairways and ranked sixth in driving distance for the week.
“I drove it great all week,’’ Mickelson said. “It’s a great example of why I feel that was the best decision I’ve ever made for my career, and I went on to win this week. So I’m just very appreciative to the commitment they’ve made to me and that I get to be with them.’’
Music to Callaway’s ears as its man prepares to play for his fourth Masters victory.
