I must admit, when these irons first came into the Golf Monthly office I knew I had to get them out onto the golf course. I just fell in love with the design and feel, and I’ve always been a bit of a self-confessed blade addict. And when a press trip to Lisbon was first mooted – one with five great golf courses up for examination – I was only too happy to put these babies through their paces.
Once you get past the great looks and feel of these irons, one of the main things you’ll notice is the standard KBS Tour C-Taper, Matrix Ozik Program shaft – a lighter weight for players with a moderate swing speed giving you a mid-trajectory with a lot of spin control. You’ll detect it the moment you hit your ball into your first green – see how quick the ball stops. It’s a great feeling.
Technology
The two-piece laser plasma-welded forged, 1025 carbon blades give you great feel at impact, and I must admit nothing beats that solid strike. Adams technicians have inserted tungsten weights low in the toe, which puts the centre of gravity in the middle of the club and those weights also help to produce minimum twist at impact.
The IDEA CMB blades also have a triple-milled face and grooves, which along with the shaft give you that great spin control into the green. And just going back to those KBS Tour C-Taper shafts, on robot testing they produced an average five-yard increase on standard shafts.
Conclusion
As you can probably tell I loved playing with these irons and in varying playing conditions. From a beautiful hot summer’s day at RIBA Golfe 2 to the winds on Odivous Dunes, they coped with everything thrown at them. I think the Adams CMB Irons are right up there with some of the best forged blades on the market.
Confidence is always a big thing in golf and the look and feel of these can only inspire your game. Blades are normally aimed at the low-handicapped golfer, but with the advances that Adams have put in, I think a mid-handicapped player, looking for a quality blade, couldn’t make a better choice than in giving the Adams IDEA CMBs a trial. I know you won’t regret it.
