Failure to Launch?

This is for those of us who just can’t say no. The glory hunters and the thrill seekers! We break the speed limit, smash records and steal the company stationary. We also find ourselves behind trees with only the briefest glimpse of green to tempt us. But, like an apple pie resting on a window ledge, we just can’t resist. If you find yourself living with a go-for-it mentality, here are my secrets to launching a rocket over any tree at your club!

>>> The Brief

Turn trouble into birdie by flying over trees and onto the green.

>>> The Weapons

Gusto, bravado, whatever you have the guts to pull off. A good idea though is to take one club worth of loft more than your ego suggests!

>>> The Execution

My inspiration for this shot comes from the great ball-strikers of the ’70s and ’80s. Players like Jack Nicklaus and Johnny Miller. The goal is to create a big windup, then fire through the ball to a big reverse-C position as the ball zooms into the air and soars to the green.

1) You’ve got to set up for this shot like you mean it. The ball is forward in your stance just inside your left heel. Your weight distribution is about 60/40 favoring your right side.

2) Focus on making a big shoulder turn. That’s right, John Daly style! Really get that left shoulder tucked underneath your chin and feel as if every muscle in your body is burning to fire back at the ball.

3)Through impact, feel as if the club head is being ‘thrown’ past the handle creating maximum loft. To accentuate the feeling of this action, try making a few swings with my little trick of gripping with your left pinkie off the grip.

4) A big launch needs a big finish with an old school lean back. Think 1975 and you’ll be well on your way. A limber lower back will certainly help.

>>> Expect

A few fat shots as the combination of adjustments necessary to create launch will tend to make the club bottom out early. A little cushion beneath the ball will help when trying to pull this shot off.
