A Little Bit of Hollywood Moves into Toledo

Toledo, Ohio, has just upped its ‘star power’ exponentially with the addition of the new Hollywood Casino.

Located off the well-traveled I-75 corridor at Miami Street (Exit 199), the casino is an easy off/easy on the expressway, which in itself will make it a favorite for some.  Although its goldenrod exterior brick eventually may get tiresome, for now, it’s playful and retro – and perfect for what’s inside.

Visiting during the first week of its opening, parking was directed by attendants who led you to your spot, so it felt a little like arriving at Disney.  Nonetheless, parking was easy and the attendants negated the endless circling of the usual bunch who always need to find the closest spot.

Inside, the casino’s spanking-brand-new feel is a treat.  Everything is clean, fresh and fun.   Although not smoke-free, there is a sizable non-smoking section, and Hollywood Casino’s ventilation seems to generally be excellent.

The décor is very ‘Vegas.’   Big art-deco lettering, oversized ornamentation and poster-size-plus black & white photos of movie greats make the fun factor big.   However, it would have been nice to jump start the experience with some new-club-member bonus play, but none was offered.

With more than 2,000 slot machines and 60 gaming tables, there’s a decent variety and some new fun games, like Pink Diamonds, take the electronic pizzazz to a new level.   Overall, during our first visit, the slots were average, to slightly below, in their payout, as all three of us left with emptier pockets.

The buffet was excellent in its selection and preparation – with food ranging from sushi to good tasting chicken and sweet potatoes.  The desserts, although delightful to the eye, were average and the Italian cannoli , one of my tests of authentic preparation, were not Italian and not worthy of a taste, so should either be improved or removed from the dessert  selection.

The casino and restaurant staffs, despite the overwork of first-week crowds, were pleasant and friendly. Run by Penn National Gaming Inc., the experienced management style shows.

I look forward to revisiting, but for now, the Hollywood Casino gets my thumbs up.  (Initial ratings follow below.)
