  • Is Golf a Real Sport? Check Out my Pro-Golf Editorial in the Current issue of Outside Magazine

I golf, I cycle, I run, I hike, I ski, I do a lot of things. In this regards, I am unusual. Most of the people I know who I consider “outdoorsy,” including my ski and bike partners, look down their noses at my beloved golf. They are wrong in this regards, and sometimes even stupid. That is the gist of my story in the current issue of Outside Magazine, one of my favorite publications to both read and write for. They do a monthly opinion column called The Big Idea, and mine is in defense of golf as a sport, and ...

  • Finally A Champion to Challenge Tiger Woods

We’ve been hearing about the next Tiger Woods for years. Or at least someone who could stand toe to toe and challenge him without faltering, as the majority of the Tour has over the past decade. First it was Sergio Garcia (broken heart maybe, but no Majors, still). Then it was Camilo Villegas, whose certainly got game, definitely has style and still has time, but doesn’t have much in the way of winning hardware. In fact, I have some helpful advice for Gilbert: if these big name hotels are actively selling packages, and presumably making a profit, by invoking the name of your (copyrighted) book, shouldn’t you get a cut of the action? Something to ask your lawyer about. Then maybe I won’t get any more releases. The book, I think, is about a woman ...

  • What do Barbecue Competitions and Golf Have in Common? More than You Might Think!

I love all things barbecued. That’s reason enough to play golf in some places. Teeing it up on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast, for instance, is a decision made much easier by the nearby presence of not one but two venues of The Shed, a world class barbecue joint. Ditto for any golf course in Austin, TX, home to a formidable array that includes the Salt Lick, Rudy’s and many others. In fact barbecue is becoming so popular and so widespread, that I know fanatic places to choose everywhere from New York City to Venice Beach. Ribs, brisket and pulled pork are all ...
