This week’s host is the Club de Golf Chapultepec, which is located just 10-miles from downtown Mexico City. Willie Smith a Scotsman who won the US Open Championship in 1899 designed the course that opened for play in 1921 and hosted the Mexican Open Championship 14-times between its inception in 1944 up until 1960.
Unfortunately Willie died of pneumonia in 1916 before the course was completed, fortunately another US Open Champion was on hand to take up the reins, Alex Smith – Willies brother – who won the US Open twice in 1906 and 1910 completed his brothers vision of a tight tree lined design. The course was completely redesigned by Percy Clifford in 1972, leaving little trace of its original layout.
