The European Tours UK Swing continues this week and moves to Hertfordshire and the Hanbury Manor Golf and Country Club which officially open for play in 1991, but there is a rich history to this venue.
The manor house itself was built in 1890 for the Hanbury brewing family and converted to a girls boarding school in 1923, the transformation from boarding school to a luxury hotel came about in 1986, but golf featured before its rebirth as a hotel. Six-time Open Champion Harry Vardon – who also won the US Open in 1900 – was commissioned to produce a 9-hole golf course on the estate in the early 1900s and this is what gives this golf course its unique variety as the second nine was added by Jack Nicklaus ll in 1990.
