Because of the worldwide Covid pandemic, this year’s WGC Mexico Championship has been moved to The Concession Golf Club in Florida. The course is named after what is probably known as the “greatest single sporting gesture ever” when Jack Nicklaus conceded Tony Jacklin’s 2-foot putt on the 18th green at Royal Birkdale to tie the Ryder Cup for the first time in its history and if you remember the furore when Tiger Woods conceded to Francesco Molinari in the 2012 miracle of Medinah Ryder Cup matches giving Europe the outright win, well I don’t think we will ever see a gesture in sport like it again.
The Concession Golf Club is set in a 1,200-acre private community on Florida’s Gulf Coast south of Tampa. This is a Jack Nicklaus “Signature” course designed in collaboration with Tony Jacklin and inspired by that moment of golfing history. Tony Jacklin stated “I want the clubhouse full of memorabilia and pictures and reports of the great Ryder Cup games and epics. We want to epitomize the game and the values we love.”
