The European Tour now moves to the Spanish Canary Islands for the next three events and first up is the Gran Canaria Lopesan Open, which is being held at Maspalomas Golf on Grand Canaria. The course was designed by Ron Kirby and opened for play in June 2006 and hosted the 2007 Spanish PGA Championship.

Meloneras Golf is located on the Meloneras coast, between the Maspalomas Dunes and the harbour of Pasito Blanco in the southern part of Gran Canaria. The famous Dunes don’t come into play as the course lies further to the west, with the course sitting on the clifftops overlooking Pasito Blanco marina and La Punta Yacht Club.

The course is owned and operated by the Lopesan Hotel Group who took a piece of land and made some substantial changes to the landscape, an area formerly without any environmental value has now become an area of beauty when more than 1,100 palm trees of different species were planted.
