The world’s top golfers will converge on Oakmont, Pennsylvania for the third major of the year, which will be played over the father and son designed Oakmont country club.

In 1903 Henry Clay Fownes purchased some open rolling farmland in Oakmont borough, which is situated 14-miles east of Pittsburgh. His team of 150 men and 25 donkeys designed a course over the open farmland that resembled an unobstructed links course. Work was finally completed in the summer of 1904 and Oakmont CC opened for play.

Henry C. Fownes and his son William believed golf should be difficult to remain interesting and were convinced that bunkers and greens were the courses best form of defence and to punish the bad tee shot, a less thought through approach shot or badly read putt.
