A golf buddy of mine says the one aspect of belonging to a private club he misses the most is the shoe service. Now a denizen of public courses, he says his shoes are rarely cleaned and polished. “The only time they look new is when they are,” he once confessed.
As a former private club member, I can identify with these thoughts. I love to play fall golf and, whenever possible, some winter golf in Michigan. When I do, it’s imperative to wear waterproof shoes that are also warm. Of course, two pairs of socks will do well for the latter.
On that note, I learned about the Washington-based footwear company that’s making a nifty-looking and performing golf shoe. The company is TRUE and its testing ground is in the Pacific Northwest, usually synonymous with wet playing conditions. TRUE’s co-founder is Ryan Moore, (no relation), a multiple winner on the PGA Tour. As an aside: Moore in 2004 won the USGA Publinx at Michigan’s The Orchards GC and the Western Amateur at Point O Woods in Benton Harbor. Oh yes, Moore also won with the US Amateur at Winged Foot that momentous season.
Offering a number of models for both men and women, TRUE is breaking ground with its Original 1.2 shoe boasting a number of eye-catching features. First, there’s a 2-year guarantee on the waterproof construction. It has a wide toe box lending more comfort, especially for 18-hole walkers. Second, this model is equipped with a “bulletproof” alternative leather in the toe box and saddle that protects against scratches, wrinkles, and water. And the tongue protecting the laces from one’s foot is also waterproof, something not always found on other shoes.
Another bonus of TRUE is its packaging. They’re shipped in a reusable soft-sided pouch ideally serving as a shoe bag. I haven’t seen this innovation before and it’s a smart, sustainable idea.
In terms of styling, TRUE won’t disappoint. Multiple colors are available both in solid and saddle shoe options. The two-tone soft white and brown model is very attractive. But for the more conservative, there is a plain black option.
The Original 1.2 model is priced at $170 and comes with a 30-day guarantee if you’re not happy with the product. Shipping is free. The website also has a store locator so you can see if TRUE is available nearby. There were two in my zip code. Visit www.truelinkswear.com
