Favorite Golf Courses

MPS at the Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland.

As an author and golf and travel writer who frequently broadcasts from golf-related destinations around the world, I am often asked the question: “What is your favorite golf course?”
This is a very, very difficult question to answer, since golf courses are so individual, depending on their designer, locale, and the intent of the developer. Nevertheless, since I’ve written for most of the major golf magazines and still serve on the Cigar Aficionado “Best of Golf” rating panel, I felt perhaps it was time I stepped up and answered the question.

The major magazines use various criteria for their ratings, including defense of par, walkability, shot values, variety, playability, etc. I, however, won’t be listing the courses based on anything but my own personal tastes and experiences – and the level of fun they provided. I have also broken down the list into categories.

We’re blessed in Michigan, and in America, to have a wealth of entertaining golf courses. My opinion is certain to run contrary to other’s likes and dislikes, and this is by no means, due to space, an all-encompassing list. It also does not include the often resort facilities that can make a property attractive, but rather, is purely based on the golf courses themselves. But at least now when I am asked the question, I can organize my thoughts and give an answer.
