Poor Gerry (Bubba) Watson found his ball on an anthill during the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. He asked for relief and it was rightly not given. Since the mound was not built by fire ants, it is considered a loose impediment (Rule 23-1). Also, Bubba and Bubba’s caddy were wrong in their attempted classification, ants are not burrowing animals under the rules of golf, they are insects. However, for future situations, crayfish are burrowing animals.
Well, old Bubba didn’t like the ruling and, not surprisingly, turned into his usual condescending self. Kudos to the rules official for keeping calm.
Good ole Bubba birdied the hole.
