Furyk’s tinkering leads to Callaway

Jim Furyk may have come up a bit short of his 17th PGA Tour victory on Sunday, but the 2010 FedEx champion certainly won’t blame his equipment for his inability to sink a long birdie putt on the first playoff hole at the Transitions Championship. Indeed, Furyk, who has a deal to pitch Callaway Hex Black Tour golf balls and the RAZR Fit driver — the same ball and big club that Phil Mickelson uses — credits his new gear with enhancing his ball-striking and play around the greens.

“I’ve kind of been saying all year I’ve been feeling comfortable about my game. The results on paper might not show it before this week, but I felt good about the way I’m hitting it — the way I’m shaping the ball well, my short game feels good, I’m really happy with my equipment,” Furyk told reporters Sunday night after losing — along with Robert Garrigus and Sang-Moon Bae — to Luke Donald in a four-way, sudden-death playoff. “I’m really happy with my equipment. I switched a lot of equipment in my bag this year but never felt better with it.”

Furyk, a known tinkerer, acknowledged, after a down season last year, that he had made too many changes in his quest to rediscover the form that earned him three wins and the $10 million FedEx Cup paycheck in 2010.

“I made mistakes fitting myself equipment that I could have done better,” said Furyk, who swapped his TaylorMade ball and driver for those from Callaway before last year’s Presidents Cup. “It was a product of maybe trying to get a little bit longer, maybe trying to find new ways to improve and maybe then hurting my strengths. Trying to make my weaknesses better but in doing so, hurting your strengths, which is rule No. 1. You don’t do that.”

Furyk also traded his Odyssey White Ice Dart belly putter for a standard-length Odyssey White Hot XG #7. Furyk, who has toyed with belly putters off and on for years, said he was now committed to the shorter model.

Here’s the Callaway equipment in Furyk’s bag:

Driver: RAZR Fit, 10.5 degrees

Irons: RAZR X Forged (4-PW)

Wedges: X-Forged (50, 56, 60)

Putter: Odyssey White Hot XG #7

Ball: HEX Black Tour
