The well-admired baseball and golf writer Thomas Boswell titled one his books, “Why Time Begins on Opening Day.” Boswell must have secretly believed the same about Thursday of Masters week. If you agree, and if you were tapping your toe waiting for the start of both the major-league baseball season and the major-championship segment of the golf season, here’s a timely though perhaps trivial item to tie those two concepts together:
Nick Watney, who shot a closing round of 67 yesterday to win the WGC Cadillac Championship at Doral yesterday, is first cousin to Boston Red Sox on-field TV reporter Heidi Watney.
(Pause here and look at the photo of Heidi some more.)
It will sound lame for this lifelong devoted Red Sox fan to say that Heidi is ever-prepared, quick-witted, articulate and effortlessly professional on camera. But hey just watch her on the NESN network some time and you’ll find this is true.
Heidi’s dad and Nick’s uncle, Mike Watney, coaches men’s varsity golf at Cal State Fresno, where his nephew Nick played for him with distinction, earning All-America honors three times.
So, what is this post on golf website all about ?? Oh yeah, Nick Watney winning at Doral. Yeah that’s it. Maybe at some point we’ll update it with a photo of Nick.
