Mid-September and we are only just playing the second Major Championship of the year and still have one more to come, it certainly has been a memorable and forgettable year.

The US Open Championship returns to New York and Winged Foot Golf Club, which last held the US Open back in 2006 when Australian Geoff Ogilvy took the title beating Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk and Colin Montgomerie by one shot.

The course was designed by AW Tillinghast, founded in 1921 and opened for play in 1923 with membership being by invitation only. The founders of the club came from the New York Athletic Club when some members decided to build a golf course, with the name inspired by the NYAC’s logo – although the golf club has no formal links with the Athletic Club.
