TaylorMade-adidas Golf and Nike Golf each have unveiled “out of the box’’ marketing campaigns. TMaG has an 80-foot tall R11 driver foul pole in right field at PETCO Park, home of the San Diego Padres, as part of a partnership agreement to extend through the 2013 baseball season.
The driver foul pole is classic TaylorMade marketing under President Mark King – product driven and “in your face’’ to the completion.
Nike Golf, meanwhile, has an ad that features the beautiful black horse from The Ring. Being so close to the Kentucky Derby, the ad easily could be confused for a promo for the Run for the Roses instead of Nike Golf new 20X1 golf ball, which is what it’s supposed to be about. The ad is much better done than the Tiger Woods “Did you learn anything?’’ spot of last year, but I just don’t get it.
Sometimes “out of the box’’ thinking works and sometimes it doesn’t.
