The Acushnet Company is making only 1,500 C16 drivers ($999) and 1,000 sets of C16 irons ($2,400). Neither line will be sold at retail but will be used as a laboratory of sorts for new technologies.
The lines are another way of getting people talking about the Titleist brand as Acushnet prepares for an initial public offering that is believed scheduled for this summer. Regardless, looks likes we’re beginning to see the emergence of a new Acushnet business model – 0ne in which the golf industry’s most conservative equipment company shows it’s willingness to complete in the super premium market place.
Question is, will Titleist concept golf balls be next? I doubt it.
