In a golf world seemingly dominated by long hitters, Luke Donald proudly points to himself as an exception. In fact, one could say Donald has reached the No. 1 ranking in the world the old fashioned way.
“I’m more of a classical player in an era when people are dominating courses with length,” said Donald, who posted two victories on the PGA Tour in 2011. “I don’t think a lot of people would have given me credit that I would have been able to do that. I’ve kind of been able to defy convention and do it. That’s what makes it more special.”
Donald’s classic style extends to his irons. A long-time Mizuno player, Donald currently plays Mizuno MP-62 irons, a Mizuno Hi Fli CLK hybrid and Mizuno MP T-11 wedges.
“Growing up, Nick Faldo was one of my idols,” Donald said. “He played Mizuno irons for a long time. At a young age I was inspired by him using them. I love the equipment. I’ve obviously played with them pretty much my whole professional career and in college. They work great and have got me to No. 1 in the world.”
In classic style.
