Rickie Fowler used a prototype Mitsubishi Diamana X Series shaft in a Ping i20 3-wood on his way to securing his first PGA Tour win Sunday at the Wells Fargo Championship, a Ping spokesperson confirmed on Monday. The new shaft, which Mitsubishi does not even promote on its website, is reportedly available in limited quantities from select dealers in 60 S, X and 70 S, X, XX flexes and retails for a whopping $720. That’s for the shaft alone.
Mitsubishi designs its Diamana shafts by layering ultra-thin carbon fiber in different directions throughout the length of the shaft to deliver precisely controlled lateral and torsional stiffness and stability, according to the company.
