Steve Hardison
While I have spent tens of thousands of thousands in employing my own coaches, there are many others that have had a direct, positive influence on my life. Steve Hardison is among the forefront of them. His energy and force of character border on legendary. I have never met or talked to the man, yet without marketing himself, his empowering messages resonate throughout the extensive linage of other prominent influential coaches, he has inspired. Steve Hardison definitely positively affected my coaching and my life.
Steve Hardison is often referred to as “The Ultimate Coach.” While not the most expensive coach, the investment is substantial, up front, and nonrefundable. (His latest 50-hour coaching is $200,000 and a two-hour session is $10,000.) The client then travels to Hardison’s home office in Mesa, Arizona for each session. Even his son, Blake, paid the full fee for his two-year, 100-hour coaching as Hardison values the commitment that comes with it. Tall and fit, he is a charismatic, expressive figure who is known to live his teachings. While Hardison has no boilerplate approach, he emphasizes the significance of ‘being’ over ‘doing,’ the power of commitment, and the importance of serving others without expectation. This essay delves into Hardison’s principal teaching points, illustrating their application through examples and insights from various sources. Their experience of Hardison as well as the book The Ultimate Coach by wife Amy Hardison and some video of Steve speaking are my sources for sharing his important contributions. By integrating these principles into our daily lives, we can embark on a transformative journey toward personal and professional fulfillment.
- The Primacy of ‘Being’
At the heart of Hardison’s philosophy is the concept that one’s state of being fundamentally shapes their reality. He asserts that who we are ‘being’ in any moment influences our actions and outcomes more than mere strategies or techniques. This perspective encourages individuals to focus on embodying qualities such as authenticity, love, and integrity, which naturally lead to desired results.
Example: In the book The Ultimate Coach, authored by Amy Hardison, it’s highlighted that Steve’s coaching doesn’t follow a set curriculum. Instead, he listens deeply to his clients, allowing their authentic selves to emerge, which then guides the coaching process. This approach underscores the importance of ‘being’ present and genuine in interactions.
Application: To emulate this principle, begin by identifying the qualities you wish to embody—such as confidence, compassion, or resilience. Consciously practice these qualities in your daily interactions. For instance, if aiming to be more compassionate, actively listen to others and approach situations with empathy. Over time, this deliberate focus on ‘being’ can lead to profound changes in behavior and perception.
- The Power of Commitment
Hardison emphasizes that unwavering commitment is a catalyst for transformation. He believes that when individuals fully commit to a vision or goal, they align their thoughts, actions, and energy towards its realization, often overcoming obstacles that seemed insurmountable.
Example: In a rare interview, Hardison shared how his commitment to serving clients leads to profound shifts in their lives. By being fully present and dedicated, he creates a space where clients feel empowered to commit to their own growth and aspirations.
Application: Identify a goal or vision that resonates deeply with you. Commit to it wholeheartedly by setting clear intentions and taking consistent action. For example, if aspiring to write a book, dedicate time each day to writing, regardless of external circumstances. This steadfast commitment propels you toward your goal and fosters resilience in the face of challenges.
- Serving Without Expectation
A cornerstone of Hardison’s teaching is the act of serving others without any expectation of return. He posits that genuine service stems from love and a desire to contribute, which fosters authentic connections and meaningful impact.
Example: During a talk in London, Hardison illustrated the nature of conflict arising from a mindset of taking rather than giving. He emphasized that by focusing on giving and serving, individuals can resolve conflicts and build harmonious relationships.
Application: Engage in acts of service within your community or personal relationships without anticipating reciprocation. This could involve volunteering, offering support to a colleague, or simply being present for a friend in need. Such selfless service enriches others’ lives and cultivates a sense of fulfillment and interconnectedness.
- The Importance of Authenticity
Hardison teaches that embracing one’s true self is essential for personal fulfillment and effective leadership. Authenticity fosters trust, encourages open communication, and allows individuals to lead with integrity.
Example: Clients have reported that working with Hardison helped them discover their inner strength and authenticity, leading to improved relationships and professional success. By being true to themselves, they could navigate challenges with confidence and clarity.
Application: Reflect on your core values, beliefs, and passions. Ensure that your actions and decisions align with these authentic aspects of yourself. By doing so, you build trust with others and experience greater personal satisfaction and coherence in your life.
- The Role of Deep Listening
Hardison practices deep listening, which involves fully engaging with the speaker without judgment or preconceived notions. This practice allows for a profound understanding of the client’s needs and facilitates transformative coaching.
Example: In his coaching sessions, Hardison listens intently to his clients, creating a space where they feel heard and understood. This deep listening enables clients to explore their thoughts and feelings, leading to self-discovery and growth.
Application: In conversations, focus entirely on the speaker, setting aside distractions and internal dialogues. This deep listening fosters stronger connections and ensures that others feel heard and valued, enhancing the quality of your relationships.
- Creating a Context of Possibility
Hardison encourages individuals to create a context or mindset that anything is possible. By shifting perspectives and challenging limiting beliefs, people can open themselves to new opportunities and achieve extraordinary results.
Example: Clients have experienced significant breakthroughs by adopting a possibility mindset, such as launching successful businesses or overcoming personal challenges, after working with Hardison.
Application: Challenge your limiting beliefs by questioning their validity and seeking evidence to the contrary. Adopt a growth mindset, viewing challenges as opportunities for learning and growth. This shift in perspective can lead to innovative solutions and expanded possibilities in various aspects of life.
- The Significance of Integrity
Maintaining integrity is a fundamental aspect of Hardison’s teachings. He believes that aligning one’s actions with their values and commitments builds trust and credibility, both personally and professionally.
Example: Hardison’s adherence to his commitments and values serves as a model for his clients, inspiring them to act with integrity in their own lives, leading to stronger relationships and reputations.
Application: Regularly assess whether your actions align with your stated values and commitments. If discrepancies arise, take corrective action to realign yourself. This practice ensures consistency and fosters trust in your relationships and endeavors.
- The Impact of Environment
Hardison teaches that the environment one creates influences their behavior and outcomes. Surrounding oneself with supportive, positive influences fosters growth and success.
Example: Clients who have cultivated environments that reflect their goals and values, such as supportive communities or inspiring workspaces, have reported increased motivation and achievement.
Application: Curate your environment by surrounding yourself with individuals who inspire and support your growth. Create physical spaces that reflect your aspirations and promote productivity and well-being. A conducive environment serves as a foundation for achieving your goals.
- Embracing Vulnerability
Hardison encourages embracing vulnerability as a strength. Being open about one’s fears and challenges fosters deeper connections and personal growth.
Example: Clients who have allowed themselves to be vulnerable in coaching sessions have experienced profound insights and healing, leading to more authentic and fulfilling lives.
Application: Share your authentic thoughts and feelings with trusted individuals, even when it feels uncomfortable. This openness can lead to stronger relationships and personal insights, fostering a sense of authenticity and connection.
- The Practice of Gratitude
Hardison emphasizes the importance of gratitude in cultivating a positive mindset and attracting abundance. Regularly acknowledging and appreciating the good in one’s life enhances well-being and satisfaction.
Example: Clients who have adopted daily gratitude practices report improved mental health and a greater sense of fulfillment, aligning with Hardison’s teachings on the power of gratitude.
Application: Develop a daily gratitude practice by reflecting on and noting things you are thankful for. This habit shifts focus from what’s lacking to what’s abundant, fostering a positive outlook and greater life satisfaction.
By integrating these principles into our lives, we can emulate Steve Hardison’s transformative approach, leading to profound personal growth and enriched relationships. Embracing a state of ‘being,’ committing fully to our goals, serving others selflessly, and cultivating authenticity and integrity pave the way for a fulfilling and impactful life.
