As the PGA Tour season gets revved up, TaylorMade’s move to the “ghost” look of white-colored clubheads is increasingly on display. The amount of air time Martin Kaymer and Luke Donald will be getting in the final of the WGC-Accenture Match Play final should lead many a viewer to form an impression of the white-driver look. Kaymer, suddenly No. 1 in the world rankings, outplayed a brain-weary Bubba Watson off the tee in yesterday’s intriguing semi-final match, occasionally equaling Bubba for distance but definitely superior in accuracy. Donald, a Mizuno endorsee, plays TMaG white off the tee, as well. Will the TaylorMade R11’s white look grow on people purely because of repeated exposure and from the success players like Kaymer achieve with it ? Or, do golfers simply like the look anyway, and would get geeky about it even if it had showed up on club made by a middle-of-the-pack equipment maker ? I’m thinking they’ll embrace the whiteness because they see the technology as superior, with a sizable segment of buyers taking the plunge even though ghosty-white isn’t exactly their visual cup of tea.
