By most definitions, I have the distinct honor and privilege of just about finishing “Midlife.” I made it out alive. In doing so, I get to pontificate about how you might make the most of it — even if I didn’t. Actually, I experienced all the variations of life’s highs and lows, but that’s for another time.
Now why did I use the word, “privilege?” Well, it’s a time when not all of us got through it. Getting to appreciate nature, my team winning a championship, children growing up, and grandchildren was something not everyone has the chance to experience. So before you lament that you can’t run as fast or jump as high (or at all) or that you wish you could afford a trip to the plastic surgeon for a facelift or tummy tuck, just consider how wonderful it is to still wake up and be alive.
Ah, midlife. It’s that elusive period of life that sneaks up on you when you least expect it, like a surprise birthday party where you’re the guest of honor and the cake is a metaphor for existential angst. But when exactly does midlife begin and end? And more importantly, how can we make the most of it without spiraling into a midlife crisis? Let’s embark on a light-hearted journey through the midlife maze and discover the answers together.
First things first: when does midlife actually begin and end? Well, according to conventional wisdom, midlife typically spans from around age 40 to 60. Now with increased vitality, I say it’s closer to the mid-seventies. But let’s be honest, age is just a number, and midlife is more of a state of mind than a specific point on the calendar. After all, you’re only as old as you feel, right? So if you find yourself relating more to the dad jokes and early bird specials than the latest TikTok trends and A-I Prompts, congratulations—you may have officially entered midlife territory.

In fact, midlife can be a time of great opportunity, growth, and reinvention—if you know how to navigate it with humor, grace, and a healthy dose of self-awareness. After all, life’s too short to let fear or self-doubt hold you back—so why not take a leap of faith and see where it leads?
- Embrace Change: As the saying goes, the only constant in life is change, and nowhere is this truer than in midlife. On top of that, change is simply accelerating. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup—so be sure to fill yours up with plenty of love, laughter, and good old-fashioned TLC.

If you are like me, that shiny sports car or those material things might have been fun if you could have them, but they really don’t matter. People and our experiences do. Whether it’s nurturing relationships with family and friends, forging new connections with like-minded individuals, or giving back to your community, cultivating meaningful connections is essential for happiness, fulfillment, and a sense of belonging. Individualism is over-rated; we came from tribes. After all, life is meant to be shared—so why not surround yourself with people who lift you up, inspire you, and make you laugh until your sides hurt? Perhaps you can find ways to do the same for them.
