That goes for golf apparel, too, and most manufacturers know that earning customer loyalty means meeting or exceeding value and quality benchmarks. Carnoustie delivers on that formula.

Founded more than 20 years ago, the Irvine, California-based manufacturer is making a bit of joyful noise as it ups its marketing, and those who give its sportswear a try won’t be disappointed.

Recently, my husband and I tested a couple of shirts. His was from Carnoustie’s Performance line. First of all, the colors of the gray men’s polo are great. While you might think pink, orange and white lines are a little crazy, pin-striping them on charcoal gray is classic and stylin’. Add a solid charcoal gray collar and the subtle Carnoustie embroidered orange logo on the back, just below the collar, along with accent stitching and you’ve got something going. The 88/12 percent polyester/spandex blend is soft and moves with you, and the finishing stitching is clean and stylish. Simply perfect.

In addition, the sizing seems true and generous, and the men’s shirt had an extra inch or so of length on the backside to keep it well tucked during a golf swing.

The women’s stretch stripe polo is equally appealing, plus I LOVE the three-quarter length sleeve. Talk about the perfect design for spring/fall golf!

My shirt’s white pin-striping on blue gives it a classic, sporty look, and the button-less collar and placard give it the right feminine touch. The 95/5 percent cotton/spandex blend has a nice amount of stretch, and the cotton, while heavier than the men’s polyester blend, is comfortable and form-fitting without being excessively revealing. Sizing seems to be pretty true, but like a lot of women’s clothing seems a touch on the slim slide.  If you’re generally, a bigger ‘medium’ for example, I might recommend a ‘large’ — although a medium would form-fit nicely, too.

The fit is also slenderizing as it hugs, yet moves, with you. And again, the embroidered Carnoustie logo below the collar brands the shirt, but very subtly and actually adds a nice finish to the shirt.

As the company itself says in one web slogan, “Enjoy your good taste both on and off the course.” And that’s the truth.
